Cannabinoids Conversion

In addition to providing cannabis/hemp extraction solutions, Lab1st has also been specializing in cannabinoids conversion processes to maximize the use of raw materials. Today the most popular cannabinoids conversions are the conversion of THC to CBN, CBD to CBN, or delta-8 THC. Below, we give you a brief introduction, for more information of any conversion of cannabinoids please contact us.

1. THC to CBN

CBN is not a native element in the cannabinoid. It’s formed by aging or oxidized processing. It’s the product of degraded tetrahydrocannabinol acid (THCa). After exposing to air or UV light for a long time, the THCa will convert into CBNa. We can transfer CBNa into CBN by decarboxylation. In addition to natural aging and ultraviolet light, heating is another method to realize the conversion of THC to CBN. Delta-9-THC itself readily oxidizes to cannabinol (CBN) with oxygen and light during the decarboxylation process.

According to other studies, oxidant compunds can help to achieve this conversion as well, “refluxing in toluene with two equivalents of iodine was sufficient for the spot-to-spot conversion of Δ-9-THC into CBN.”

2. Make Delta-8-THC

Delta-8-THC products are very popular since it has a similar effect to delta 9, but are slightly weaker. Moreover, it’s legal in many states when it meets the below regulations. They should be made from hemp-derived cannabinoids (such as CBD) and delta-9-THC ’s content is less than 0.3%. Most importantly, Delta-8-THC is more profitable than CBD these days.

Different from CBN, Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-8) is a natural cannabinoid, but typically in extremely low quantities, which is not unprofitable to extract. Nowadays, they are more commonly produced in laboratories. You can use your excess CBD or Delta-9-THC to make this conversion. This conversion uses a non-polar organic solvent, like heptane.

Lab1st completes this process in a short path distillation kit and the reactor by following steps, mixing the solvent with CBD oil/isolate, adding acid into the solvent solution, neutralizing the acid, removing the solvent, washing or purifying the extract, and finally testing the purity of your final products.
